Whenever someone says "beardhat" I can't help but post my own work.
Here is my most lumberjackoff creation: http://i.imgur.com/EPPZ8.jpg
It's easy to make. I got a cheap hat from a church basement sale, there were dozens there and were about $.50 cents each. Then attach beard.
I don't have a pattern but here's the general idea (I really need to sit down and write this out or have someone do it for me)
Make a chain that's about 32. Then put in 4 popcorn stitches, then a chain long enough to cover your upper lip (I'm a 10 chain) then 4 more popcorn stitches.
Now here's the cool part: Popcorn stiches are reversable so you can just turn, chain enough to get up to the next row (3 chain) and then put a popcorn stitch in right on top of the last one. When you look at your popcorn stitch, there's a little butthole in the top, that's where your going to insert (snicker) your hook to make the next popcorn stitch on top of that.
When you finish 4 for that row, make a chain long enough to go under your bottom lip, then carry on popcorning. The third row and every row after that, you're going to just popcorn all the way to the end, no more chains. You do this for 6 total rows. Then, you can end off. Then I usually will dip into the bottom corner of the piece and stich up the side to make it neatly edged. Break off and do the same for the other side.
Then you need to make a little net on the underside to catch the chin, so it's not just hanging on the face loosely. You make a couple single crochet, then double, then triple once you get to the middle of the chin, then do the same in reverse till you get to the other bottom corner.
Like I said, popcorn is reversable, so if it looks backwards, just "pop" the offending stitches in the other direction.
Edit: message me if you want to sit down sometime on skype or whatever and I'll show you closeups of the beards and point out what I talking about. It's okay if you don't want a project this big and don't message me :)
